King Tunji the tyrant and Kola's guard code of honor...Chapter four

Burning village

'KOO KOO ROO KOO!!! KOO KOO ROO KOO!!!", the cock crowed signaling the sighting of dawn. Kola rode majestically, fully armed, on his black colored steed to the direction of the main square where his well trained Royal guards were to wait for his arrival. On the way, he remembered the dreams of the night, a dream of him burning the village and his wife in it, the thought of it drew terror from his heart, he shook his head for he wanted to see them no more, but he had to obey the orders given to him no matter what. In less than thirty minutes, he had joined his men and began on their way to the south west region.

"Commander?", Bola called from behind not shocked that the commander had not given a prep talk before embarking, he knew Kola very well for he was the second in command and also the right hand man of the Commander.

"Bola what is it?", Kola asked with his sight not deviating from the path that they rode, for he had known what was on the minds of Bola and his men, but didn't have the courage to look them in the eye to tell them what needed to be said.

"My Lord, I and the rest of the men know this is not right, give us the order and we shall do what must be done", Bola said beating his hand on his chest.

"By what must be done, you mean killing your King and committing treason?", Kola asked, he was a man that never liked hiding the true meaning of words when it can to serious matters. This was one of the lessons taught to him by his father.

"My Lord, that is what I mean",

"Do not incur the wrath of the gods of our land by saying that once more, or have you forgotten the King is second to the gods?", Kola said with greater authority in his voice, his wisdom with words and his strength in battle had been what earned him the love of his men, and their willingness to die for him.

Bola saw that his decision was made and unchangeable, so he decided to press on no more, while they continued their journey.

It was a three hour long journey, but finally they arrived at their destination, what they saw was beyond comprehension. Before their eyes was the burning village of the Iha iwo-ooruns.

"What is happening here!", Kola asked amazed at the sight of the village already up in flames.

No one could give him an answer as they all had arrived the same time. With no one in sight, Kola attempted to ride his steed into the flames but was stopped by the men around him.

"What are you people doing?, get out of my way!!!", he ordered but they refused to listen.

"Kola!", an old man called out from the bushes.

Kola turned his view to the man and instantly recognised him as the chief his father had asked to train him at a young age.

"Baba, what happened here?", Kola said as he stopped struggling and turned his steed towards the man.

"Don't worry about the villagers, go and report to the King that you have completed his orders, as for my people, their new chief had led them out of the Kingdom yesterday, I was the one who torched the village at their request",

Kola was glad that he didn't have to take any lives that day, and yet he was sad that the village had actually been burnt down.

"What shall we do my Lord?", Bola asked.

Kola stared at the sky as the smoke lifted up to the heavens, a smile rose to his face, and then his words followed by a loud cry from his men, "To the Palace men!!!".
