It's the thought that counts... CHAPTER ten
"Damn girl your life's so messed up" Charlie said staring at the highway, and all the headlights from the passing cars.
"You think? I don't even know what to do about it anymore" Mayowa said sobbing.
"What's there to do except move on, that boy doesn't deserve you besides I'm sure you can find someone better than him" Charlie said touching her hand.
"I don't know about that, I don't even think I deserve to find anyone better, not after what I did" she said leaning against his shoulder, for some reason she felt like she could put her complete trust in him.
"You mean the incident with your mom?" he asked.
Mayowa drew back in shock, "I didn't tell you about my mother".
"No you didn't, but any doctor in their right sense would know that what happened with your mother wasn't an accident, neither was it self inflicted and trust me, I've seen a lot of self inflicted wounds" he said.
Mayowa calmed down and with a deep breathe asked, "Then you know what I did?".
"Of course I do" he answered.
"But you still talked to me regardless" she said, "why?".
"The things is, nobody attacks another person for no reason let alone their own mother, so I thought maybe you had a good reason for doing so. Besides those bruises on you say a lot" he said pointing at the scars made visible by the evening breeze.
Mayowa began nursing the scar inflicted by her on herself when she tried to escape Luci's earlier torments.
"Still I'm curious as to what your motives were" Charlie said looking her in the eye now.
"I can't really tell you that" she said.
"And why is that?".
"I can't tell you that either" she answered.
"Really? Then what can you actually tell me?" he asked growing impatient.
She opened her mouth to speak but hesitated after remembering what had transpired the last time she tried to tell someone what had been wrong with her, but Luci wasn't present at the moment.
"It's..." she began to speak but got interrupted by the sound of the door banging against the wall, drawing their attention towards it.
"Doctor Charlie! Doctor Charlie!" a nurse called out.
"Yes!?" he answered yelling.
"It's an emergency, please hurry!" she yelled back.
"I guess that's my cue" he said with a grin and climbed down the edge of the roof, "I'll see you around".
"Okay!" she said watching him run out the door and down the stairs.
"Nicely done" Luci said startling Mayowa as he floated before her.
"Ah!" she yelled in shock, "what's your problem?!".
"I don't have one, beings like me only live for ourselves, thus we don't often incur problems for ourselves" Luci said.
"Forget I asked" she said turning her attention back to the door, "Where have you been?".
"Me? I've been around taking care of business" Luci said with a grin.
"Business?" she asked.
"Yes, now keep quiet" he said pausing for a few minute, "Three, two, one".
'Ring! Ring! Ring!' her phone vibrated in her pocket, she reached in to grab it.
"Don't answer it, they'll ruin the surprise" Luci said.
"What surprise?" she asked reading the name on it.
"You'll see when you get downstairs" he said.
"But it's my dad, it could be important" she said.
"It's important alright! Very important! That's why you are going downstairs to check it out" he smirked, "It might be your mother".
Mayowa leapt off the edge and began making her way down the stairs as quickly as her legs could take her. Her heartbeat hastened as she grew closer to her mother's room. At the door was her father standing with a worried look as he stared into his phone dialing her number.
"Where have you been?" he asked.
"I was at the rooftop" she answered.
"That doesn't matter now, she wants to see you" he said.
"Mom?" she asked as her legs became stiffened from fear of being called a demon once again by her own mother, she took a step backwards.
"Yes your mother" he answered pushing her into the room.
"Mayowa!" her mother called out stretching her hand in need of her daughter's embrace. Her voice had become coarse and unclear, her wounds hadn't been completely healed yet.
Tears began forming in Mayowa's eyes as she raced into her mother's arms yelling, "Mommy I'm sorry!".
